Press Release: 2018 National Values Assessment Provides Update on Singaporeans’ Views about Society and their Workplace

The study suggests that affordable housing, effective healthcare, care for the elderly and disadvantaged, respect and compassion are what would define Singaporeans’ ideal society, while employee recognition, engagement and fulfilment, mentoring and continuous learning are what would define employed Singaporeans ideal workplace.

aAdvantage Consulting Group and Barrett Values Centre jointly conducted the 2018 National Values Assessment in Singapore that showed the following (not in order of importance):

  1. Top 10 values Singapore Residents said best describe themselves:
    Family, health, caring, friendship, responsibility, honesty, happiness, compassion, balance (home/work), humour/fun.
  2. Top 10 values Singapore Residents perceive reflect the Singapore society today:
    ‘Kiasu’, complaining, competitiveness, materialistic, educational opportunities, blame, 'kiasi', self-centredness, care for the elderly, effective healthcare.
  3. Top 10 values Singapore Residents said they desire to see in the Singapore society:
    Affordable housing, care for the elderly, compassion, care for the disadvantaged, effective healthcare, caring for the environment, dependable public services, educational opportunities, concern for future generations, respect.


The objectives of the study are to obtain preliminary insights into what matters to Singapore Residents and to generate meaningful dialogue about the society and workplace environment that Singapore Residents desire.
